KUMEKUCHA – It’s a new dawn
The short documentary won the SDG Action Film Award 2019 in the “Building Peace” category.
Mama Zuria Omar, a community leader from Majengo, an informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya tells her poignant story of transformation after suffering unspeakable loss. She stoically bore the pain, uncertainty, and stigma of her son’s recruitment to al Shabaab, then only to lose him when he was killed upon his return home.
Through Green String Network’s Kumekucha program, a community Wellbeing and Resilience program in Majengo, Mama Zuria charted her path to forgiveness. Mama Zuria is now a much-valued leader and resource in her community as she continues to promote healing, peace and reconciliation in Majengo and beyond.
